Cynosure ICON 1540 Fractional Resurfacing Laser
The ICON 1540 Fractional Laser is an Erbium:YAG Fractional Resurfacing Laser that is gentler on the skin than older CO2 resurfacing lasers. A powerful laser producing new skin and collagen in areas treated, this is an excellent option for wrinkles and acne scars, and is the only FDA cleared device for the treatment of stretch marks. This treatment typically produces 12-48 hours of redness when used it at its most aggressive settings.
How does fractional laser skin resurfacing work? Skin Resurfacing Lasers deliver light to the skin causing the cells to release proteins that stimulate new collagen and elastin generation. The laser light is tricking the skin into thinking it has been injured and activates the wound healing pathway in the skin. This is the same pathway that generates skin when we get a paper-cut or scrape. The minute columns of light produced by the laser start the bodies’ natural healing process that forms new, healthy tissue. This generation of new tissue is what treats away the skin’s imperfections such as wrinkles, acne scars, stretch marks, and surgical scars.

At The Dermatology and Laser Group we know our Manhattan patients well. We know that the great majority of our New York City patients have active work and social lives and can’t take weeks to recover from their laser procedure. That is why we offer the advantage of Fractional Non-Ablative Laser Skin Resurfacing. This allows for great results and a quick recovery. When other resurfacing devices such as CO2 lasers use the ablative method, removing the epidermis and some of the dermis, the drawbacks include red, raw skin, a risk of infection for several weeks after treatment, and prolonged downtime.
The discomfort felt during the procedure is typically described by most of our patients as minor. Patients are also welcome to come in a bit early for their appointment to have a prescription topical numbing cream applied to the areas being treated.
Following the procedure most patients experience redness and swelling in treated areas for a few hours. Rarely, this can last as long as 2 days. The areas can be masked with a physician approved foundation 24 hours following the procedure. As your new skin tissue is generated in the treated area you will notice positive changes in your skin that continue to occur for several months following the procedure.
The best way to learn more about the procedures we offer at The Dermatology and Laser Group is to visit us for a consultation in our Manhattan office. I cannot recommend Dr. Akhavan’s practice enough. Dr. Akhavan answers all my questions, no matter how dumb. Unlike my last dermatologist, I felt that they listened to me and allowed me to have input on decisions regarding my health care…

Dr Akhavan is an outstanding dermatologist. I went in for a skin check and he discovered an abnormal mole. Note that I was 8 months pregnant at the time…

Dr. Akhavan came highly recommended by my close friend and colleague. Although I trust my friend’s word, I still checked the doc out on Yelp. As of today, Dr. Akhavan only has FIVE STAR reviews and you know what? Everything everyone says about him is true!…

Dr. Akhavan was prompt, courteous and informative. I went on the day of snowpocalypse 2014. It didn’t matter, the doctor and his staff were in the office ready for my visit…
