What is Cellulite?
Up to 90% of women have cellulite and studies show that the majority of women want effective cellulite treatment options. Thankfully in recent years, there have been some new innovative procedures that have come to market.
Cellulite Facts
Cellulite is dimples or depressions in the skin, most common on the buttock and thighs of women in their 20’s-50’s. It is estimated that as many as 9 in 10 women have cellulite. It is thus important to understand that cellulite is the norm and does not need to be treated. However, 85% of women with cellulite say that it negatively impacts their life and that is why we are proud to offer the most advanced options for the treatment of cellulite in NYC.
Anatomy of Cellulite
The main cause of cellulite is changes in fibrous bands called septa that tether the skin to structures below (1). When normal, these bands are necessary and good, keeping the skin smooth and attached to underlying structures. Sometimes these tethers can harden and shrink, pulling down on the skin above and causing dimples. In other instances, these bands degrade and weaken the attachment between the skin and underlying structures causing loose skin that appears rippled or wavy.
Innovative Cellulite Treatments Offered by Dr. Arash Akhavan
The Dermatology and Laser Group has been at the forefront of cellulite treatment for over a decade. Dr. Akhavan is amongst the first physicians in New York City to offer effective cellulite solutions such as Avéli and Emtone, just as he was with older cellulite treatments such as Cellfina and Qwo.
Avéli is a minimally invasive one-time treatment that provides long-lasting results in reducing the appearance of cellulite dimples, and Emtone is a non-invasive solution to treat rippled cellulite and loose skin.

Avéli Cellulite Treatment
For true cellulite dimples caused by thickened and constricted septa the best and newest treatment available is Avéli. This device is far superior to previous treatments for cellulite tethers- Cellfina and Qwo. It has supplanted them as the main treatment for long-term improvement of cellulite dimples.
Avéli is a one-time, FDA-cleared cellulite treatment that offers impressive results in reducing dimpling on the buttocks and thighs. Aveli is an innovative device that selectively targets and releases the constricted septa that are causing cellulite (2). It does so without damaging the healthy septa supporting the skin.
The Avéli treatment works by targeting and severing the fibrous bands, known as septa, that are responsible for the appearance of cellulite in the buttocks and thighs. This FDA-approved procedure offers long-lasting results.
Prior to the Aveli procedure patients are numbed with local anesthetic injections so that there is no pain during the procedure.
The Avéli procedure involves the insertion of a handheld device beneath the skin to mechanically sever the septa that cause dimpling of the skin’s surface. This innovative treatment typically takes around one hour and is designed to address the primary structural cause of cellulite.
The Avéli procedure is a minimally invasive treatment that requires minimal recovery time, allowing patients to return to their daily activities immediately. With Dr. Akhavan’s expertise and dedication to patient satisfaction, you can be confident in the exceptional care and results provided by The Dermatology and Laser Group.
Recovery from Avéli
Aveli is a one-time treatment and the cellulite dimples that are treated show improvement as early as 2-3 weeks after the procedure, with results gradually improving further over several months. As the procedure is only minimally invasive, most patients may resume normal day to day activity immediately following the procedure. Strenuous exercise should be avoided until any tenderness and swelling is resolved. This may take several days.
Under the expert care of Dr. Akhavan and his team, a smooth recovery process and a rapid return to your daily routine can be anticipated.

Aveli is a minimally invasive procedure that should be performed by a Board Certified Dermatologist or Plastic Surgeon trained in Cosmetic Procedures. The cost for an Aveli procedure starts at $3,400 but discounts may be available for new patients sharing Before and After images. The exact cost can be determined at the time of consultation and will depend on the number of dimples being treated.
When Do You See Results from Aveli?
The earliest results from Aveli are seen as soon as any bruising or swelling fades away. The dimples continue to improve with time with great results evident by 3 months.
In The News: Dr. Arash Akhavan Discusses Avéli With The Press
Dr. Arash Akhavan and The Dermatology and Laser Group have been leaders in introducing Avéli Cellulite Treatment to the public and Dr. Akhavan has been featured in the national press discussing the procedure. He was interviewed for Byrdie, where he described the FDA-cleared cellulite treatment in depth. Dr. Akhavan was featured in Marie Claire discussing if Avéli was worth it as a procedure for cellulite removal. You can also find a very thorough question and answer session about Avéli with Dr. Arash Akhavan with Modern Aesthetics magazine.
Emtone Cellulite Treatment
Some of our patients seeking treatment for cellulite are not candidates for Avéli. What some patients refer to as cellulite is not true cellulite dimples but is instead loose skin that can appear rippled or wavy cellulite. The best treatment for these patients is Emtone, a device that combines Radiofrequency (RF) and Targeted Pressure Energy (TPE) that smooths fat and improves collagen and elasticity in the skin. Dr. Akhavan has been a national leader in using Emtone for cellulite treatment.
Emtone is a non-invasive treatment that uses radiofrequency technology to tighten and smooth the skin, improving the appearance of cellulite. The treatment works by:
- Heating the tissues to stimulate collagen production in the underlying tissue, resulting in smoother and tighter skin
- Enabling relaxation of the connective-tissue bands
- Enhancing blood circulation, further reducing the appearance of cellulite.
Emtone is a no-downtime and effective option for those seeking a non-invasive solution to cellulite concerns.
Emtone is also great when combined with Avéli for the treatment of cellulite dimples that are combined with loose skin. Avéli would be completed first as a single treatment to improve the cellulite dimples. We would then begin Emtone treatments after a few weeks to help with skin tightening and smoothing.

Other Cellulite Treatments
Cellfina
Cellfina is a minimally invasive cellulite treatment that provides long-lasting results by breaking up the connective bands beneath the skin. This FDA-approved subcision technique is designed to treat the dimples associated with cellulite, offering an effective solution for those seeking a more permanent solution. As Avéli is clearly a superior procedure, we no longer offer the Cellfina procedure at The Dermatology and Laser Group.
Hyperdilute Radiesse
A diluted form of the calcium hydroxylapatite filler Radiesse can be injected anywhere on the body to improve skin texture and elasticity. We often combine these injections with Emtone to treat the loose rippled skin form of cellulite on the thighs and buttock.

Frequently Asked Questions - Cellulite Treatment
The best cellulite treatment depends on the type of cellulite being treated. The best procedure for the removal of cellulite dimples is Avéli. Dimples are puckered areas of skin similar to the indentations on a golf ball. For rippled, loose, or textured skin the best treatment is the Emtone device.
We have treated many celebrities with the procedures mentioned on this page helping them to reduce their cellulite, achieving smoother skin. For the very best results, we often use a combination of procedures to address all types of cellulite together. A popular combination of treatments includes using Avéli to treat cellulite dimples on the buttocks and thighs, and then using Emtone together with hyperdilute Radiesse injections to help improve skin texture and treat cellulite ripples.
Unfortunately, there are no creams that can actually treat cellulite. There are creams that can temporarily moisturize and/or cause minor inflammation in the skin leading to improvement in the appearance of cellulite for a few hours. But no cream can penetrate deep enough to the tethering fibrous bands to help treat the structural elements of cellulite.
The cost of cellulite treatment can vary depending on the type of cellulite, the extent of cellulite, and the individual needs of the patient. Typical starting cost for cellulite treatment is around $3500.
