Chemical Peels for Skin Resurfacing in New York City

KYBELLA® is the first and only FDA-approved injectable used to contour the appearance of fat below the chin (submental fat). This common but undertreated condition, often called ‘double chin,’ can add the appearance of weight and age to the face. Until recently, surgical options were the only way to address pockets of fat in this region.

Dr. Akhavan, our founding New York dermatologist, offers KYBELLA® is the most innovative way to permanently remove submental fat. Its active ingredient is deoxycholic acid, a naturally-occurring molecule in the body that aids in the breakdown and absorption of fat. When used to treat submental fat, KYBELLA® destroys fat cells, creating a smoother and more beautifully contoured profile.

Kybella® Frequently Asked Questions

Am I a Candidate for Kybella®?

An ideal candidate for KYBELLA® is someone who is 18 or older with moderate to severe fat below the chin and is seeking a non-invasive solution.

Is Kybella® Safe?

KYBELLA® is a minimally invasive injectable procedure. Most patients experience minimal swelling following treatment, but in rare cases, bruising, difficulty swallowing, or facial muscle weakness can occur. Most patients can return to work immediately after receiving treatment.

Is Kybella® a Better Option Than Liposuction?

Certainly, there are instances where submental liposuction may be a better option for patients, but many patients find the advantages of Kybella® to outweigh traditional liposuction. Liposuction is done in a single visit, compared to Kybella® which might require multiple visits. However, Kybella® is much less invasive than liposuction. Patients can avoid all of the risks with surgery such the risk of infection, longer downtime, and potential complications associated with anesthesia.

What Can I Expect After Kybella® Treatment?

Typically, patients require 2-4 treatments of KYBELLA® spaced a few weeks apart to see ideal results. Cases vary for everyone’s individual profile. When you discuss your goals with the staff at the Dermatology and Laser Group, we will be able to determine how many treatments you will need to achieve ideal results.

Is Kybella® Painful?

Pain is always relative, but many patients describe the procedure as being mildly uncomfortable at first, with discomfort subsiding as the procedure progresses. Many patients find that the level of discomfort lessens as with subsequent treatments. An over the counter pain reliever is typically adequate for patients who are concerned about the discomfort.

How Long Does the Procedure Take?

The procedure is not complicated, so patients can be in and out within 20 minutes.

How Much Does Kybella® Cost?

The cost varies depending on the number of treatments necessary. The team at the Dermatology and Laser Group can provide you with a more accurate quote during your consultation.

Is there any downtime with Kybella®?

No. Patients can return to work and their normal activities immediately.

Are There Any Side Effects?

Most patients who try KYBELLA® are thrilled with their results and experience no side effects, but as with any medical procedure side effects are possible. The most common side effects are swelling, bruising, mild pain, numbness, redness, and areas of hardness around the treatment area. More serious, however rare, side effects can include trouble swallowing or nerve injury resulting in a weakening of facial muscles.

How Long Will My Results Last?

KYBELLA® works by permanent destroying the fat cells under the chin, so once eliminated those fat cells will no longer be able to store fat. However, it’s important patients continue to maintain a healthy diet and lifestyle to avoid fat accumulations in other part of the body.
