IPL at The Dermatology and Laser Group

IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) is a non-invasive skin treatment that uses broad-spectrum light to target pigmentation, redness, and other skin imperfections. Unlike lasers, which use a single wavelength of light, IPL uses multiple wavelengths to address various skin issues at once.

A Photofacial is a specialized IPL treatment focusing on the face, targeting sun spots, age spots, and vascular lesions like broken capillaries and redness to achieve a more even complexion.

We have treated thousands of patients with the IPL and Photofacial procedure over the last decade. The IPL treatment and photofacials are popular with our NYC patients looking for an easy treatment to improve sun spots, or treat acne and redness.

  • Safe and Effective

IPL is safe and effective when performed by an experienced provider. At The Dermatology and Laser Group all IPL procedures are performed by board-certified dermatologist, Arash Akhavan, MD, a nationally known expert in cosmetic and laser procedures.
  • Great Option for Acne

IPL is also a great option for acne treatment.  The m22 IPL device we use in our office is FDA-cleared for the treatment of acne.  We combine it with skin care, HydraFacials, and prescription medications to improve the treatment of acne.

What can you treat with IPL?

IPL treatments and PhotoFacials can improve:

  • Sun spots and age spots (hyperpigmentation)
  • Broken blood vessels and redness (rosacea, facial veins)
  • Freckles
  • Uneven skin tone and texture
  • Acne and inflammation-related redness

We use the m22 IPL by Lumenis that has specific filters on the IPL device for each of these indications.

What is IPL?

IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light and it is a non-invasive treatment that uses broad-spectrum light to target pigmentation and vascular lesions beneath the skin's surface. Unlike laser treatments, IPL uses multiple wavelengths to address a variety of skin concerns. This makes IPL an excellent option for conditions as varied as sun damage, broken capillaries, and acne.

How Does IPL Work?

The IPL device delivers pulses of light that penetrate the skin and are absorbed by melanin in pigmented areas or by hemoglobin in blood vessels. This light energy is then converted to heat, breaking down pigmented cells and shrinking blood vessels. Over time, the body naturally removes these damaged cells, leading to a clearer, more even complexion.

The Lumenis M22 device we use ensures precise control, allowing us to adjust the wavelength and intensity of the light to suit your specific skin type and concerns, ensuring optimal results without unnecessary discomfort.

What to Expect During an IPL Treatment

A typical IPL session at the Upper East Side office of The Dermatology and Laser Group lasts between 15 to 60 minutes, depending on the size and condition of the area being treated. During the procedure, a gel is applied to the skin for comfort and to increase the penetration of the laser. The IPL device is then passed over the treatment area, delivering pulses of light that feel like a rubber band snapping sensation. Most patients describe the treatment as mildly uncomfortable, and not too painful. Post-treatment cooling is often provided to minimize any potential inflammation.

Photofacial: Targeting Sun Spots and Redness

A Photofacial is a specialized IPL treatment that focuses on improving the appearance of the face by reducing sun spots and vascular issues like broken capillaries and redness. This targeted treatment can dramatically enhance the skin's clarity, creating a more even and youthful complexion. It is an excellent choice for those suffering from sun damage, rosacea, or uneven skin tone.

What to Expect After an IPL Treatment

After the treatment, your skin may appear red or slightly swollen, similar to a mild sunburn, which typically subsides within a few hours to a few days. Pigmented spots may darken temporarily before flaking off naturally over the next week. It’s essential to avoid sun exposure and apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen to protect the skin during the healing process.

In the days following treatment, patients often notice their skin tone becoming more even and brighter. While some results may be visible after the first session, a series of at least treatments one month apart is usually recommended for the best results.

Who is a candidate for IPL and Photofacial Treatments?

IPL is most effective for individuals with lighter skin tones (Fitzpatrick skin types I-IV). Ideal candidates are those looking to improve sun damage, hyperpigmentation, or vascular lesions (such as broken capillaries or rosacea). IPL can be used to treat sun spots, age spots, and visible blood vessels on the face, neck, chest, hands, and other areas of the body. Additionally, it is effective in reducing both acne and the redness associated with acne, making it a versatile option for patients seeking a clearer, more even skin tone.

IPL is not safe to use for leg veins. To treat spider veins on the legs we use special Nd:YAG laser.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the cost of IPL or a Photofacial?

The cost of an IPL session will depend on the area being treated and the number of sessions. For example, the cost would be reduced for smaller areas and when the session is purchased as part of a package. Ask us for a quote to get the exact pricing for your particular needs.

How many IPL sessions will I need?

Most patients require 3 to 5 sessions, spaced about 4 weeks apart, to achieve optimal results. The exact number depends on your skin's condition and the severity of the pigmentation or redness. We offer IPL as either packages of 3 sessions at a time or single sessions.

Is IPL treatment painful?

IPL is generally well tolerated, with most patients describing it as a rubber band snapping sensation. Our M22 IPL device includes cooling technology to enhance comfort during the procedure.

What can a Photofacial be paired with?

A Photofacial is an excellent procedure to pair with fractional laser resurfacing in a treatment called PhotoFractional. This combination allows you to target redness and brown spots with IPL while also stimulating collagen production through fractional laser resurfacing. Together, these treatments address pigmentation concerns, improve skin texture, and treat wrinkles, offering comprehensive skin rejuvenation in a single session. PhotoFractional is ideal for patients looking to achieve both clearer and smoother skin.

How soon will I see results from IPL?

Results from IPL treatments are gradual, with pigmentation and redness fading over the course of several weeks. Full results are typically seen 6 weeks after the final treatment session.
