Ultherapy NYC
Non-Surgical Lift and Skin Tightening

Rejuvenating Minimally-Invasive Skin Tightening Procedure
Ultherapy is one of the most popular devices in our NYC office. Ultherapy is the gold standard non-invasive therapy for lifting and tightening skin. With over 60 clinical trials completed proving it’s efficacy and safety, Ultherapy is FDA cleared for:
- Lift of the Neck
- Lift of the Chin
- Lift of the Brow
- Improvement of winkles on the decolette
Additionally, with over a decade of experience performing Ultherapy treatment in NYC for our patients – we are experts at applying the technology for off label uses including:
- Improvement of wrinkles on the face, neck, and body
- Skin tightening of the face, neck, and body
Improvements in the last 1-2 years in the technique and machinery of the Ultherapy device have led our patients to have “WOW!” results with improvements they are greatly impressed with when they look at their before and after images.
Is Ultherapy Safe?
Ultherapy is safe, with over 1 million treatments performed worldwide. It is performed as a single treatment with no downtime. The results are long lasting and NATURAL and come on gradually from 2 months to over 180 days.
When you undergo Ultherapy in our NYC Board Certified Dermatology Practice you have the benefit of knowing you are receiving the most safe and effective treatments possible from a team headed by a Board Certified Dermatologist that is nationally recognized as a leader in non-invasive cosmetic procedures of the face and body. Dr. Akhavan is consistently listed as a Top Doctor in publications such as New York Magazine and Castle Connolly.
Mechanism of Action of Ultherapy
Ultherapy uses ultrasound technology to optimally heat tissue at three specific depths to induce neocollagenesis (the creation of new collagen). These depths are 4.5 mm to reach the SMAS (Superficial Muscular Aponeurotic System), 3.0 mm to reach the subcutaneous tissue, and 1.5 mm to each the deep dermis. The SMAS is the same depth that is treated during face lift surgery. The power and depth of Ultherapy is why it is the ONLY device FDA cleared to say it lifts

Ultherapy is a very unique device as it uses ultrasound technology in 2 ways: 1) it uses powerful and focused ultrasound to deliver energy to specific depths of tissue and 2) it also uses ultrasound technology to visualize the treatment area under your skin for maximum safety.
How does Ultherapy create collagen?
The process is called neocollagenesis and it occurs in 3 overlapping stages.

- Inflammation (immediately following treatment): Starting from treatment time to 70 days post treatment a type of white blood cells called macrophages come to the treated areas and release growth factors stimulating proliferation of new cells such as fibroblasts that promote repair and remodeling of tissue.
- Proliferation (within hours after treatment): Starting the night of the treatment, fibroblasts will synthesize new collagen (mostly type III collagen) and other proteins to rebuild the collagen matrix (the scaffold upon which new tissue growth occurs).
- Maturation (3 weeks to 1 year after treatment): In the last step of neocollagenesis, type III collagen is gradually replaced by type I collagen, which forms strong crosslinks and provides structure and support to your skin.

Ultherapy NYC: RESULTS and Before and After Images
The results you can achieve in terms of lifting and tightening with an Ultherapy treatment in our NYC is office is incomparable to any other non-invasive procedure. That is the reason why Ultherapy has been the only device to achieve FDA clearance for non-surgical lift. In a split face study where patients where only treated with Ultherapy on one half of their face, Ultherapy increased collagen production by 42%. This leads to significant improvements in lift, tightening, and wrinkle reduction.

PATIENT COMFORT
As with almost all other non-invasive energy based devices such as lasers and RF microneedling, ultherapy has some amount of discomfort associated with the energy emitted from the device. Making our patients as comfortable as possible for all of our procedures, including Ultherapy, is something we are passionate about and have become known for in NYC. For Ultherapy we have many options including maximum strength prescription numbing creams, devices made to increase comfort including Zimmer Cooler (air chiller) and ProNOX (nitrous oxide), vibratory analgesia, and anti-inflammatory medications.

Ultherapy Treatment Frequently Asked Questions
Ultherapy is the only FDA-cleared procedure that targets the deep foundation, below your skin, without cutting or disrupting the surface of the skin. Also, the only procedure to use ultrasound imaging, Ultherapy allows our surgeons to view the deeper layers and direct the ultrasound to the specific areas that need it the most. The level of precision and the degree of transformation seen from Ultherapy can only be surpassed by surgical intervention. So if you’re not ready for a facelift, an uplift with Ultherapy could be for you.
The lasers offered at The Dermatology & Laser Group address issues in the superficial layers of the skin (e.g. fine lines, wrinkles, pigment changes). Ultherapy addresses the deep skin layer and the foundational layer addressed in cosmetic surgery that lift and lend support to the skin. Therefore, the two technologies are quite complementary!
The procedure has been cleared by the FDA after demonstrating safety in clinical studies, and over 200,000 treatments have been performed safely worldwide. In addition, ultrasound energy has a proven track record, with use in the field of medicine for more than 50 years.
Ultherapy sessions usually last 60-90 minutes. You do not have to take downtime after your treatment, but as the process can leave you red, and there is the possibility that your surgeon will prescribe you medications to limit discomfort, we suggest taking the remainder of the evening to relax after your procedure.
Most patients note that they can feel the ultrasound working. However, comfort thresholds vary from patient to patient, and so it is difficult to say if you will experience this as discomfort. What you do feel during delivery of the ultrasound energy is temporary and a positive signal that the collagen-building process has been initiated. Patients typically leave comfortable and excited about the benefits to come!
Exciting advancements have recently been implemented, including a new-and-improved treatment approach and update to the procedure’s System, Ultherapy Amplify, which is proven to increase patient comfort of the procedure without impacting efficacy. Of course, your practitioner will consult with you prior to your skin treatment to make your experience as pleasant as possible.
Ultherapy works best on areas with moderate loose and sagging skin in the brows, neck, décolleté, and under the chin. While Ultherapy can certainly provide improvement for severe sagging and loose skin, the results will be less dramatic.
Patients may enjoy some initial effect but the ultimate lifting and toning will take place over 2-3 months, as tired collagen is replaced with new, more elastic collagen. As this collagen-building process continues, further improvements can appear up to 6 months following a procedure.
Results from Ultherapy have been shown to last for at least 2 years, with gradual aging beginning to show after the 2 year period. In order to prolong your results, you may wish to have another Ultherapy treatment at the end of the 2 year period. Remember that no procedure is able to stop the aging process, but Ultherapy can help you make significant progress towards turning back the effects of gravity.
The majority of patients only need one treatment; however, some may benefit from more than one treatment (depending on how much laxity you have and your body’s own biological response to the ultrasound and collagen-building process). Your physician will be able to recommend the right treatment plan for your needs during your cosmetic consultation.
