FDA-Cleared Non-Invasive Lift
Ultherapy is the only FDA-cleared non-invasive procedure that has approval to lift skin on various parts of the face. Ultherapy lifts and tightens the skin on the neck, under the chin, and on the brow, as well as improves lines and wrinkles on the décolletage and lower to mid-face.Natural Results | No Downtime
Ultherapy is a patient favorite because of its ability to deliver natural-looking results. By stimulating your body's own collagen production over the course of 6 months, Ultherapy gradually enhances your appearance, ensuring that the results look effortlessly natural—never strange or overdone. Despite its powerful and effective technology, Ultherapy requires no downtime, allowing you to return to your daily activities immediately after treatment.Safe and Effective
Ultherapy is safe and effective when performed at The Dermatology and Laser Group. The procedure is performed by a powerful device that can potentially cause complications when completed in spa type settings where an appropriate physician is not present. At The Dermatology and Laser Group all procedures are directly supervised or performed by a board-certified dermatologist.
Ultherapy Treatment Areas
There are many FDA-cleared indications for Ultherapy on the face, neck, and decolétté. Additionally we use Ultherapy off-label to tighten skin throughout the body. Areas we use Ultherapy include:
- Brow Area: lifting of eyebrows
- Eye Area, Upper Lip, and Cheeks: improvement of lines and wrinkles and tightening of skin
- Double-Chin Area: tightening and lifting of the skin under the chin area (submental area)
- Neck: lifting, tightening, and improving lines and wrinkles of the neck
- Décolleté: improvement of lines and wrinkles of the décolletage
- Body Areas: we also use Ultherapy to tighten skin on the abdomen and thighs, especially above the knees
What is Ultherapy?
Ultherapy is an FDA-cleared non-invasive treatment that uses ultrasound technology to lift and tighten below the surface of the skin, providing natural-looking results without the need for surgery. The Ultherapy procedure is ideal for individuals seeking a more youthful appearance without the downtime and risks associated with traditional cosmetic surgery.
Ultherapy also reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles on the face, neck, and body.
The Science Behind Ultrasound Skin Tightening
Ultherapy works by targeting specific depths of skin tissue, stimulating collagen production, and providing a natural lift, making it a non-surgical alternative to a traditional facelift and neck lift. Unlike laser treatments that use light energy to target superficial skin layers, Ultherapy uses sound energy to penetrate deeper into the skin tissue, achieving more comprehensive and effective results.
This innovative approach allows for significant skin rejuvenation without the need for invasive procedures like a surgical facelift.
How Does Ultherapy Work?
To fully appreciate Ultherapy, it's essential to understand its innovative approach. Ultherapy harnesses ultrasound technology to reach precise depths within the skin, stimulating collagen production for a natural lift.
Targeting the Right Skin Depth
The key to Ultherapy’s effectiveness lies in its precision. With the innovative Ultherapy handpiece we are able to see the depth of skin that we are targeting. We are able to precisely deliver the ultrasound energy to enhance collagen production in both the SMAS (Superficial Musculoaponeurotic System) layer and the dermis. The SMAS is a layer of collagen located just beneath the skin and is responsible for the face's overall contour and firmness. Targeting the SMAS produces a lifting and tightening effect, and targeting the dermis improves skin texture, fine lines, and wrinkles. By targeting specific skin layers, it ensures that the ultrasound energy is delivered exactly where it's needed, resulting in a more comprehensive and effective treatment compared to other options.
Stimulating Collagen Production
Ultherapy stimulates your body’s natural collagen production by delivering focused ultrasound energy to heat and produce healthy inflammation in the skin. Collagen is then produced in three stages:
- Inflammation (immediately following treatment): Starting from treatment time to 70 days post treatment, white blood cells called macrophages come to the treated areas and release proteins called growth factors. These growth factors stimulate proliferation of new cells such as fibroblasts that promote repair and remodeling of tissue.
- Proliferation (within hours after treatment): Starting the night of the treatment, fibroblasts will synthesize new collagen (mostly type III collagen) and other proteins to rebuild the collagen matrix (the scaffold upon which new tissue growth occurs).
- Maturation (3 weeks to 1 year after treatment): In the last step of neocollagenesis, type III collagen is gradually replaced by type I collagen, which forms strong crosslinks and provides structure and support to your skin.
Achieving a Natural Lift, Skin Tightening, and Smoother Texture
The production of collagen in deeper layers leads to a lifting and tightening effect of the skin. More superficial collagen production in the dermis helps improve fine lines and wrinkles.
Expertise of The Dermatology and Laser Group
At The Dermatology and Laser Group, all of the Ultherapy procedures are directly performed by or supervised by board-certified dermatologist, Arash Akhavan, MD. Dr. Akhavan and the team at The Dermatology and Laser Group were one of the first practices to offer Ultherapy in New York City.
Safe and Effective Treatments
Ultherapy is the only non-invasive device that is FDA-cleared to produce a non-surgical lift of multiple areas of the face and neck. It achieves these results through use of powerful and precise ultrasound based technology. Because of the great power in the Ultherapy device, incorrect usage can lead to serious complications. Ultherapy should therefore always be performed under the direct supervision of a board-certified dermatologist. At The Dermatology and Laser Group, all Ultherapy procedures at our clinic are performed under the direct supervision of Arash Akhavan, MD.
Managing Discomfort
The most common complaint about the Ultherapy procedure is discomfort. The compassionate staff at our clinic considers your comfort during treatments one of our main priorities. We make Ultherapy more comfortable with use of things such as deeper penetrating prescription strength numbing creams, vibration devices, Zimmer coolers, and even Pro-Nox analgesic gas.
Benefits of Ultherapy
Ultherapy uses ultrasound technology to produce collagen at precise depths of skin. This lifts the skin on various areas of the face and neck, tightens the skin, and smooths fine lines and wrinkles.
Other benefits of Ultherapy include:
- There is no downtime with Ultherapy making the procedure perfect for busy professionals.
- Patients benefit from long lasting results with Ultherapy, with improvements lasting 1-2 years.
- There is no sun sensitivity with Ultherapy, making it the perfect procedure year round.
- Ultherapy can be combined with other procedures for additive benefits.
Potential Adverse Events
Ultherapy is generally well-tolerated, but like any cosmetic procedure, it can have potential side effects. Most commonly, patients may experience temporary redness, swelling, or tenderness in the treated area. Some individuals may also notice slight bruising or a tingling sensation, which usually resolves within a few days. In rare cases, numbness or more prolonged discomfort can occur, but these effects are typically mild and temporary.
In order to decrease the risk of adverse events it is best to have your Ultherapy procedure performed at a center where the procedure is directly supervised by a board-certified dermatologist specializing in the procedure.

Frequently Asked Questions
Ultherapy remains one of the best, non-invasive treatment for stimulating deeper skin layers and providing lasting lifting and tightening results for the face, neck, and body. It has been proven safe and effective in numerous studies. It is the best option for our patients who want to achieve a powerful effect with just one treatment.
For patients who want a quicker onset of results and a more comfortable treatment, Emface is a newer device that lifts the brow, cheeks, and under chin area with great results and high patient satisfaction.
The Ultherapy price at The Dermatology and Laser Group is typically between $750 to $5000 per session depending on the area being treated.
Ultherapy is a very popular procedure for New York City’s professionals, celebrities, and other patients who want impressive lifting results, but can’t afford any downtime.
Ultherapy treats deeper layers of skin leading to significant tightening and a lift. It is best paired with procedures that treat other layers of skin to compliment the improvements. For example, laser resurfacing treatments, medical microneedling, and TempSure radiofrequency treatments can generate collagen and elastin in more superficial skin.
Botox injections are often paired with Ultherapy to smooth dynamic wrinkles on the forehead, between the eyebrows and around the eyes.
Ultherapy is a very powerful device that uses ultrasound energy to produce heat at precise depths of skin. The profound heat produced by the Ultherapy device leads to significant production of collagen leading to a lifting effect. In contrast, radiofrequency procedures such as TempSure produce gentler heat leading to a lower level of collagen production, while also helping to generate elastin.
The advantage of Ultherapy is the relatively greater amount of collagen production, enough that Ultherapy can even non-surgically lift the skin. The advantage of the TempSure procedure is that it can be used all over the face, neck, and body, due to its gentler heating. It also produces elastin, in addition to collagen, as gentler heating is necessary to produce elastin protein.
Ultherapy and Sofwave are both non-invasive treatments that use ultrasound technology to stimulate collagen production and tighten the skin. There are however, some key differences between the devices.
Ultherapy treats at multiple precise depths, including the SMAS layer, producing a real lifting effect that lasts longer. Sofwave primarily treats more superficially. Ultheraoy is the more powerful and efficacious device.
Ultherapy also has the advantage of using ultrasound imaging, allowing us to treat specific layers effectively.
