Eligibility and Candidacy for Botox in NYC
Botox is a safe and effective option for many individuals seeking to reduce the appearance of dynamic wrinkles and achieve a refreshed, youthful look. However, not everyone is an ideal candidate. Understanding who is eligible for Botox—and who should avoid it—ensures the best possible results and safety.
Who Is a Good Candidate for Botox?
- Adults age 18 and older: Botox is FDA-approved for adults. Most patients begin considering treatment when they notice the early development of fine lines, often in their mid-to-late 20s or 30s, but there is no strict upper age limit.
- Healthy individuals: Candidates should be in good overall health, without active infections or untreated medical conditions.
- Those with dynamic wrinkles: Botox works best for wrinkles caused by repeated facial muscle movements—such as frown lines (glabella), forehead lines, and crow’s feet. If you have static wrinkles or significant skin laxity, other treatments may be more appropriate.
- Individuals seeking preventative care: Some people choose Botox before deep wrinkles set in, as a preventative measure to slow the development of lines.

Who Should Not Receive Botox?
- Pregnant or breastfeeding individuals: Botox is not recommended during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.
- People with certain neuromuscular disorders: Conditions such as myasthenia gravis, ALS, or Lambert-Eaton syndrome may increase the risk of side effects.
- Those with allergies to botulinum toxin or its ingredients: If you have had a previous allergic reaction to any botulinum toxin product, you should not undergo Botox treatment.
- Individuals with active skin infections at the planned injection sites: Treatment should be postponed until the area is fully healed.
Setting Realistic Expectations
Ideal candidates understand that Botox provides temporary improvement in the appearance of dynamic wrinkles. Results typically last three to four months, and regular maintenance is required to sustain results. During your consultation, your provider will review your medical history, assess your facial anatomy, and discuss your goals to ensure Botox is the right fit for you.
If you are unsure whether you are a candidate for Botox, a personalized consultation with our board-certified dermatologist will provide expert guidance tailored to your unique needs and concerns.

Occasional minor bruising is typical with any injectable procedure.
BOTOX® Cosmetic (3) may cause serious side effects that can be life threatening. Get medical help right away if you have any of these problems any time (hours to weeks) after injection of BOTOX® Cosmetic:
- Problems swallowing, speaking, or breathing, due to weakening of associated muscles, can be severe and result in loss of life. You are at the highest risk if these problems are pre-existing before injection. Swallowing problems may last for several months.
- Spread of toxin effects. The effect of botulinum toxin may affect areas away from the injection site and cause serious symptoms including: loss of strength and all-over muscle weakness, double vision, blurred vision and drooping eyelids, hoarseness or change or loss of voice, trouble saying words clearly, loss of bladder control, trouble breathing, and trouble swallowing.
BOTOX® Cosmetic dosing units are not the same as, or comparable to, any other botulinum toxin product.
There has not been a confirmed serious case of spread of toxin effect when BOTOX® Cosmetic has been used at the recommended dose to treat frown lines, crow’s feet lines, and/or forehead lines.
BOTOX® Cosmetic may cause loss of strength or general muscle weakness, vision problems, or dizziness within hours to weeks of taking BOTOX® Cosmetic. If this happens, do not drive a car, operate machinery, or do other dangerous activities.
Serious and/or immediate allergic reactions have been reported. They include: itching, rash, red itchy welts, wheezing, asthma symptoms, or dizziness or feeling faint. Get medical help right away if you are wheezing or have asthma symptoms, or if you become dizzy or faint.
Do not receive BOTOX® Cosmetic if you : are allergic to any of the ingredients in BOTOX® Cosmetic (see Medication Guide for ingredients); had an allergic reaction to any other botulinum toxin product such as Myobloc® (rimabotulinumtoxinB), Dysport® (abobotulinumtoxinA), or Xeomin® (incobotulinumtoxinA); have a skin infection at the planned injection site.
Tell your doctor about all your muscle or nerve conditions, such as ALS or Lou Gehrig’s disease, myasthenia gravis, or Lambert-Eaton syndrome, as you may be at increased risk of serious side effects including difficulty swallowing and difficulty breathing from typical doses of BOTOX® Cosmetic.
Tell your doctor about all your medical conditions, including: plans to have surgery; had surgery on your face; have trouble raising your eyebrows; drooping eyelids; any other abnormal facial change; are pregnant or plan to become pregnant (it is not known if BOTOX® Cosmetic can harm your unborn baby); are breast-feeding or plan to (it is not known if BOTOX® Cosmetic passes into breast milk).
Tell your doctor about all the medicines you take, including prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements. Using BOTOX® Cosmetic with certain other medicines may cause serious side effects. Do not start any new medicines until you have told your doctor that you have received BOTOX® Cosmetic in the past.
Tell your doctor if you have received any other botulinum toxin product in the last 4 months; have received injections of botulinum toxin such as Myobloc®, Dysport®, or Xeomin® in the past (tell your doctor exactly which product you received); have recently received an antibiotic by injection; take muscle relaxants; take an allergy or cold medicine; take a sleep medicine; take aspirin-like products or blood thinners.
Other side effects of BOTOX® Cosmetic include : dry mouth; discomfort or pain at the injection site; tiredness; headache; neck pain; and eye problems: double vision, blurred vision, decreased eyesight, drooping eyelids and eyebrows, swelling of your eyelids and dry eyes.

Botox Aftercare and Recovery
Immediate Aftercare Steps
To ensure optimal results and minimize the risk of side effects, it’s important to follow these aftercare instructions after your Botox treatment:
- Avoid touching, rubbing, or massaging the treated areas for at least 24 hours. This helps prevent the Botox from spreading to unintended muscles.
- Do not lie down for at least 4 hours after your injections.
- Hold off on exercise or strenuous activity until the next day. Elevated blood flow can potentially affect how the product settles.
- Skip facials, chemical peels, or other cosmetic treatments on the treated areas for at least 24 hours.
- Wait before applying makeup to the treated areas, ideally for a few hours, to reduce the risk of irritation.
What to Expect During Recovery
Most patients experience little to no downtime after Botox injections and can return to normal activities immediately. However, some mild and temporary effects are common:
- Redness, swelling, or slight bruising at the injection sites, which typically resolve within a few hours to a couple of days.
- Mild tenderness or a pinprick sensation in the treated areas.
- Rarely, a mild headache may occur after treatment.
These effects are generally short-lived and should not interfere with your daily routine.
When to Resume Activities
- Exercise: Wait at least 24 hours before engaging in vigorous physical activity or workouts.
- Facials and Skin Treatments: Postpone facials, massages, or other skin treatments in the treated area for at least 24 hours.
- Makeup: You may gently apply makeup after a few hours, but avoid excessive pressure.
When to Contact Your Provider
While serious side effects are rare, contact your provider immediately if you experience:
- Difficulty breathing, swallowing, or speaking
- Severe or persistent pain or swelling
- Unusual muscle weakness or drooping in untreated areas
- Signs of an allergic reaction, such as rash, itching, or difficulty breathing
Mild bruising, redness, or discomfort is normal and should resolve quickly. If you have concerns about your recovery, don’t hesitate to reach out to our office for guidance.
Why Aftercare Matters
Following these aftercare instructions helps ensure you achieve the best possible results from your Botox treatment and reduces the risk of unwanted side effects. Proper care supports a smooth recovery and maximizes the longevity and natural appearance of your results.
You can place this section after your treatment process description or in a dedicated aftercare/recovery area for clear patient guidance.

Botox Frequently Asked Questions
At The Dermatology and Laser Group, patient satisfaction with their results is our greatest priority. Our simple flat-rate pricing model is based on the number of areas treated, rather than units, to avoid the risk of under-treatment and premature return of wrinkles and lines.
At our office all injections are done by Dr. Arash Akhavan, a Botox expert Board-Certified Dermatologist, but they still start at prices as low as $650 for new patients. We can offer prices this low because of the large volume of Botox we do at our office and our special pricing with the companies that provide Botox products.
Ask us for a quote to get the exact pricing for your particular needs.
At our office we offer only premium brands of Botox, such as Botox Cosmetic and Daxxify.
Botox Cosmetic, known scientifically as onabotulinumtoxinA, is the original brand developed by Allergan, FDA-approved since 2002, and is the most commonly used aesthetic injection in the world.
Daxxify is a longer lasting product produced in the United States. It is FDA cleared to say it lasts up to 6 months.
We also infrequently use Xeomin, or incobotulinumtoxinA by Merz Pharmaceuticals. Xeomin is a unique “tox” as it is comprised of just the active part of the medication, without an accessory molecule. Rare patients who have developed resistance to other injections may find that they are still able to have positive effects from Xeomin because it doesn’t cause an immune response. Some patients also prefer that the effects of Xeomin also kick in a bit earlier and go away a bit sooner.
Botox Injections as a Solution for Hyperhidrosis: Botox is effectively used to combat hyperhidrosis, a condition characterized by excessive sweating. This treatment works by blocking acetylcholine, the neurotransmitter responsible for activating sweat glands. When it is carefully injected into the skin, it significantly reduces sweating by temporarily inhibiting nerve signals to the sweat glands.
Botox for sweating is one of the most popular treatments in our office.

We use Botox in all 4 FDA cleared areas of the face and neck: the glabella (or frown lines), the forehead, the crow’s feet, and the platysma bands in the neck. In addition we commonly use Botox to enhance the lips with Lip Flip Botox, to lift a downturned nasal tip, to improve chin dimpling, and to improve a gummy smile. When injected properly, Botox is also a great option to lift the brows.
We use Botox in the lateral jaw for both medical reasons to treat TMJ and for cosmetic reasons to slim the face.
On the body the most common areas we use Botox are in the upper trapezius, called Trap Botox, in order to both provide relief from shoulder tension and produce a more elegant neck line. This procedure is also called Swan Neck Botox.
Enhancing Botox Treatments with Additional Cosmetic Procedures
Botox is just one key element of face and neck rejuvenation that should be combined with other modalities for optimal results.
Sunscreen and anti-aging creams can be recommended at your appointment, and should be part of your daily at home skin care.
Additionally in office we provide a variety of treatments that maintain and build collagen and elastin in your skin, replace lost volume naturally, and reverse sun damage.
When injected by an experienced provider such as board-certified dermatologist or board-certified plastic surgeon, Botox is safe. Botox has over 2 decades of widespread use throughout the world for both cosmetic and medical applications. It is produced by Allergan, a division of Abbvie, one of the largest pharmaceutical companies in the world.
Unlike the botulinum toxin associated with food poisoning, the formulation used in treatments is specifically designed for safe application.
For most patients we find that Botox lasts around 3.5-4 months. We recommend getting Botox injections about 2-3 times a year to maintain optimal results. For those wanting a longer duration of activity we recommend using Daxxify injections. For patients that want a shorter duration of action we select Xeomin.
Preventative Botox is a marketing term used to describe Botox injections that are done before significant wrinkles have set in. The earlier you start Botox, the lighter the treatments can be, allowing less Botox to be used per injection site.
There's a myth that wrinkles will come back worse if you stop Botox treatments, but that's not true. Botox is preventative care. Every time you get a Botox treatment you have the long term benefit of slowing down the aging process for the months that the Botox was active. If you decide to stop using Botox, your wrinkles will simply return to developing in the same manner that they were before treatment, not worse.
There is no universal answer, but we generally recommend starting when you first notice the development of fine lines. For most people, this is between ages 25 and 30. Everyone's face is different and has unique needs.
