What is Botox?
Botox is a non-surgical cosmetic treatment used to temporarily relax facial muscles, reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. It is most commonly used to treat crow’s feet, forehead lines, and frown lines between the eyebrows.
How Does Botox Work?
Botox works by inhibiting the communication between nerves and targeted muscles. This temporary paralysis prevents muscle contraction, which is a key factor in the development of dynamic wrinkles—those caused by repetitive facial expressions such as frowning or squinting. The result is smoother skin with a more youthful appearance.
What to Expect During Botox Injections
During your consultation, Dr. Akhavan will guide you through specific muscle movements to precisely target areas like forehead lines, crow's feet, and other unique facial lines. At The Dermatology and Laser Group we stress safety first, followed by natural appearing results, and we will map out your muscles to ensure both of these goals are met.
Comfortable Botox Injections
Using a state-of-the-art, ultra-fine needle known as “The Invisible Needle”, we administer Botox with precision to minimize discomfort and trauma to the skin. Patients who have Botox with us for the first time often remark how much more gentle the procedure is at our office.
What to Expect After Botox Treatments
Post-treatment, patients can comfortably return to most regular activities, with a simple recommendation to avoid laying face down or engaging in strenuous exercise on the day of the procedure.
Noticeable Botox results typically emerge within 1-2 weeks. We provide a complimentary follow-up appointment two weeks later, offering additional touch-ups if necessary, ensuring each patient achieves their desired outcome with the best Botox treatment possible.
Potential Side Effects of Botox Treatments
We uphold the highest standards of safety. Administered by our experienced, Board Certified Dermatologist, Dr. Akhavan, we ensure precise injection techniques to avoid any complications, such as eyelid ptosis (drooping). Dr. Akhavan's expertise in Botox treatments has successfully prevented eyelid ptosis in thousands of procedures, reflecting our commitment to patient safety and superior care. Occasional minor bruising is typical with any injectable procedure.

At our office, we understand the diverse needs of our patients seeking cosmetic injectable treatments. Alongside Botox Cosmetic, we offer a range of alternatives like Dysport, Daxxify, and Xeomin, each designed to address wrinkles, fine lines, and other signs of aging, while also having therapeutic applications. These treatments, all based on botulinum toxin type A, vary slightly due to distinct purification processes and formulations by their manufacturers, ensuring a tailored approach to each patient's needs.
Botox Cosmetic, known scientifically as onabotulinumtoxinA, is a pioneering brand developed by Allergan, FDA-approved since 2002. It's renowned for its ability to relax dynamic wrinkles like glabellar lines, crow's feet, and forehead lines by inhibiting nerve impulses to targeted muscles, thereby softening their appearance and promoting a more youthful appearance and facial aesthetic.
Dysport, or abobotulinumtoxinA, formulated by Ipsen Biopharm, offers a quicker onset and broader diffusion, making it ideal for treating larger areas like the forehead. However, this requires a skilled injector to precisely target the desired areas and avoid unintended spread.
Xeomin, or incobotulinumtoxinA by Merz Pharmaceuticals, stands out as the 'naked' neurotoxin without any additives, reducing the chance of antibody resistance. This feature is particularly advantageous for patients undergoing frequent treatments, as it minimizes the risk of diminishing results over time.
Daxxify, the newest addition by Revance Aesthetics, boasts a longer-lasting effect, up to 6 months for some patients, due to its unique peptide-enhanced formula. As early adopters of Daxxify, we're at the forefront of offering extended-duration treatments, particularly beneficial for patients seeking longer intervals between sessions.
When selecting among these options, it's important to consider the specific treatment goals, the area to be treated, and the unique characteristics of each product. Our team's expertise in facial anatomy and cosmetic injectables ensures that we provide the most effective treatment plan, whether it's Botox, Dysport, Xeomin, or Daxxify.
While each product has its distinct advantages, they share a common goal of reducing muscle activity to smooth out wrinkles and lines, contributing to a more youthful and refreshed appearance. At our office, we provide comprehensive consultations to help patients choose the best product for their specific needs, always prioritizing safety, efficacy, and natural-looking results.
Remember, the success of these treatments greatly depends on the skill and knowledge of the injector. At The Dermatology and Laser Group, we're committed to offering the highest standard of care in cosmetic treatments, ensuring our patients in receive the best possible outcomes with their chosen neurotoxin therapy.
Botox Injections as a Solution for Hyperhidrosis: Botox is effectively used to combat hyperhidrosis, a condition characterized by excessive sweating. This innovative treatment works by blocking acetylcholine, the neurotransmitter responsible for activating sweat glands. When it is carefully injected into the skin, it significantly reduces sweating by temporarily inhibiting nerve signals to the sweat glands.
For hyperhidrosis, Botox involves precise, small injections into commonly affected areas such as the armpits, palms, or soles of the feet. The process is swift, typically completed in just a few minutes, with the peak effect occurring 2 weeks post-injection. Patients can expect relief from excessive sweating to last for several months, after which follow-up treatments may be necessary to maintain the results. Our patients appreciate this effective, minimally invasive approach to managing hyperhidrosis.
At our office, Botox is expertly injected into various facial areas to reduce excessive muscle contractions, softening lines and wrinkles for a rejuvenated, natural look. While the goal isn't always to achieve a completely wrinkle-free appearance,it offers the flexibility to significantly diminish wrinkles, especially with early treatment initiation.
Areas commonly enhanced with include frown lines, forehead wrinkles, crow's feet, bunny lines, and neck's vertical bands. Additionally, it is adept at improving a gummy smile, lifting a downturned nasal tip, and creating fuller lips through the Botox Lip Flip technique. Even the drooping corners of the eyebrows can be subtly lifted, particularly when treating crow's feet, even preventing future lines.
Beyond its cosmetic uses, it also addresses medical conditions like excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis) and TMJ pain effectively. A notable innovation is the use of "Trap Botox" in the trapezius muscle, providing relief from shoulder tension and contributing to a more elegant neck line, often referred to as "Swan Neck Botox." This approach underscores Botox's versatility in both aesthetic and therapeutic uses at our office. Read more about what areas Botox can treat
Enhancing Botox Treatments with Additional Cosmetic Procedures
At The Dermatology and Laser Group, we often complement Botox treatments with other advanced procedures to further enhance the youthful appearance of our patients. While it effectively smooths dynamic wrinkles like frown lines and forehead lines, we also utilize hyaluronic acid dermal fillers and state-of-the-art laser treatments to address fine lines and static wrinkles. For more pronounced wrinkles, fillers can provide substantial improvement, and in certain cases, we offer a 'liquid facelift' for dramatic, yet non-surgical rejuvenation. This technique involves using fillers to replicate the results of a traditional facelift.
Typically, the optimal results of Botox and fillers become visible within 2 weeks, whereas the full benefits of laser treatments may develop over several months, offering a comprehensive approach to facial rejuvenation.
Safety Profile of Botulinum Toxin in Botox: Concerns about the safety of botulinum toxin are common, yet it's important to note that the botulinum toxin used in Botox , provided by Allergan - a globally recognized pharmaceutical leader - is extremely safe for medical and cosmetic use. Unlike the botulinum toxin associated with food poisoning, the formulation used in treatments is specifically designed for safe application.
Its mechanism of action involves temporarily blocking nerve signals to the muscles, primarily through the inhibition of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter. This targeted approach ensures effective reduction of muscle activity leading to wrinkles, without the hazardous effects associated with other forms of botulinum toxin.
Longevity of Botox: The duration of effects can vary, influenced by factors such as the quantity used, as well as the patient's age and individual physiology. Our Manhattan clinic ensures the provision of fresh Botox for every treatment, guaranteeing optimal results for our patients. Typically, injections maintain their effect for about 3-4 months when administered in standard doses. Patients preferring a more subtle effect with increased facial movement might notice a shorter duration of effects.
Conversely, a higher dose aimed at more pronounced muscle relaxation may extend the longevity of the results, though this could compromise the natural look of the outcome. At The Dermatology and Laser Group, Dr. Akhavan advocates for a balanced approach to treatments, achieving lasting results that maintain a natural facial appearance.
For convenience, we offer to set reminders for your next session, ensuring timely follow-up treatments.
Preventative Botox Treatments: Preventative Botox, increasingly popular at our office, is an innovative approach to combat aging before the onset of wrinkles. Often referred to as 'Baby Botox,' this technique involves administering small amounts of Botox to patients who are yet to develop significant lines or wrinkles, effectively delaying their appearance.
Understanding the intricacies of facial anatomy is crucial for successful preventative treatments. Strategic injections, such as in the forehead, are designed to not only prevent wrinkle formation but also to maintain a youthful brow position. It's essential, however, to choose experienced practitioners like those at The Dermatology and Laser Group, as improper techniques could inadvertently accelerate the aging process in treated areas. Our approach focuses on harnessing Botox's preventative capabilities while ensuring natural, age-defying results.
Botox for TMJ Disorders and Jawline Aesthetics: Botox's versatility extends to treating TMJ (temporomandibular joint) disorders and enhancing jawline aesthetics in our office. TMJ disorders often manifest as tightness and discomfort in the jaw muscles, frequently due to muscle tension and overuse. By administering into the masseter muscle, we achieve a dual effect: alleviating TMJ symptoms and reducing teeth grinding, which is often a related issue.
Furthermore, it is increasingly popular for facial contouring, particularly in slimming the lower face. Many of our patients, including those from diverse international backgrounds, opt for Botox to achieve a more refined jawline. This treatment subtly weakens the masseter muscle, leading to a desirable aesthetic effect without invasive procedures.
Both these applications of demonstrate its broad utility beyond traditional wrinkle reduction, offering therapeutic relief and aesthetic enhancements tailored to individual needs. Our expert team ensures each Botox treatment is precisely administered, prioritizing patient comfort, safety, and optimal results.
