What Age To Start Botox

Botox Cosmetic is a simple injection treatment that improves dynamic wrinkles caused by repetitive facial movements, such as smiling, frowning, or squinting. It is easily one of the most popular cosmetic procedures worldwide. In the United States, Botox Cosmetic is FDA-approved for use in four key areas: crow’s feet (lines around the eyes), the forehead, the glabella (frown lines between the eyebrows), and the platysma bands (vertical bands) in the neck. By  relaxing the muscles in these areas, Botox softens wrinkles and thereby rejuvenates the face and/or neck.

In recent years, we’ve noticed a trend of younger patients coming to us to ask about Botox—many even in their  low 20s—curious about whether starting early could help prevent wrinkles from forming in the first place. This growing interest in what’s often referred to as Preventative Botox raises an important question: What is the best age to start Botox Cosmetic?

When Should You Get Botox

There is no universal "best age" to start Botox—it truly depends on the individual and their unique genetics, stressors, skin, and facial dynamics. The ideal time to begin preventative Botox is when you first notice wrinkles forming with facial expressions, such as smiling, frowning, or squinting, but before those expression lines remain on your face even when your muscles are at rest.

Starting Botox at this stage allows for smaller, more precise doses to be used, allowing for a more natural range of motion and facial expressions. .  Botox can subtly enhance your appearance without looking "frozen" or overdone- (also referred to as "bad Botox").

While the right age varies from person to person, we’ve found that the most common age that it makes sense for our patients to start is around 26. This can be earlier or later depending on factors like genetics, lifestyle, and how expressive your facial muscles are.

We can help you decide when is the appropriate time to start Botox in NYC during you consultation.

The Benefits of Starting Botox Early

Starting Botox early has a few key benefits to maintain a youthful appearance and prevent future signs of aging.  One of the key advantages is its ability to prevent the formation of deep wrinkles by relaxing the muscles responsible for expression lines before they become etched into the skin.

Another important benefit of early Botox that is injected by an expert, it the ability to selectively target the muscles that pull the face downward while leaving the muscles that lift the face relatively strong. As an official trainer for the company that makes Botox, Dr. Arash Akhavan has found that many Botox injectors unfortunately  do not properly place injections for this lifting effect, and is another reason why Botox is best injected by experts. By addressing the downward-pulling muscles, Botox can help counteract the drooping of facial structures that naturally occurs with aging. This balanced approach not only softens wrinkles but also subtly lifts and rejuvenates the face over time.

Another benefit of injecting Botox when patients are younger is that Botox can often be used in smaller amounts, a technique sometimes referred to as Baby Botox. This method involves using very small doses to relax targeted muscles while preserving natural movement and expression. By starting Botox before deep wrinkles form, Baby Botox can provide subtle, natural-looking results that enhance your features without making it obvious you’ve had a treatment.

Incorporating Botox into your aesthetic routine early can have long-term benefits, helping you look refreshed and youthful for years to come while preventing the need for more invasive treatments later in life.
