How to Control Sebum Production on Face?

Sebum is the natural oil produced by the sebaceous glands in the skin, and while it plays an important role in keeping the skin hydrated and protected, excess sebum production can lead to oily skin, clogged pores, and acne breakouts. Controlling sebum requires a balanced skincare routine, lifestyle adjustments, and, in some cases, professional treatments. Controlling excess sebum production is one of the main aspects of our acne treatment protocol.

A well-formulated skincare routine is essential for managing oil production. Using a gentle cleanser twice a day helps remove excess oil without over-drying the skin, which can actually trigger even more sebum production. Oil-free or non-comedogenic moisturizers help maintain hydration without clogging pores, and products containing niacinamide, salicylic acid, or retinoids can help regulate sebum levels. Additionally, oil-absorbing products like clay masks can be beneficial for those struggling with persistent shine.

Diet and lifestyle also play a role in sebum production. A diet high in processed foods, dairy, and sugar may contribute to increased oiliness, so incorporating antioxidant-rich foods, healthy fats, and plenty of water can help keep skin balanced. Managing stress is also important, as high cortisol levels can stimulate the sebaceous glands to produce more oil.

For those with persistent or excessive oil production, professional treatments like chemical peels and certain types of Hydrafacials can help regulate oil production.

If you're struggling with oily skin or breakouts, schedule a consultation with our expert team to develop a personalized skincare and treatment plan to effectively control sebum production and achieve a balanced, healthy complexion.
