Treatments by an Expert.

All treatments by a cosmetic dermatologist.

Spider veins are small, visible blood vessels that develop near the skin’s surface, often appearing as red, blue, or purple web-like patterns on the legs and thighs. While harmless, they can be a cosmetic concern. Unlike varicose veins, which are larger, raised, and sometimes painful, spider veins are thinner and do not typically cause discomfort.

At The Dermatology and Laser Group's NYC clinic, we offer two highly effective treatments for spider veins: sclerotherapy and laser therapy. Sclerotherapy involves injecting a solution that causes the veins to collapse and fade, while laser treatment uses targeted energy to break down the veins without the need for injections. Both options are minimally invasive, safe, and designed to restore clear, smooth skin.

Spider Veins on Legs

Spider veins commonly appear on the legs due to the increased pressure placed on the veins from standing, walking, and daily movement. These small, dilated blood vessels are caused by weakened or damaged valves within the veins, leading to improper blood flow and visible vein networks near the skin’s surface.

Certain factors increase the likelihood of developing spider veins. Genetics play a significant role, as they often run in families. Hormonal changes from pregnancy, menopause, or birth control use can also contribute to their formation. Other risk factors include prolonged standing or sitting, obesity, aging, and a history of blood clots. Women are more commonly affected than men, and the likelihood of developing spider veins increases with age.

Although spider veins and varicose veins both result from weakened vein function, they have distinct differences. Spider veins are smaller, flat or slightly raised, and form web-like patterns, while varicose veins are larger, bulging, and may cause pain, heaviness, or swelling in the legs. Unlike varicose veins, which may require medical intervention such as surgery to prevent complications, spider veins are primarily a cosmetic issue and can be effectively treated with minimally invasive procedures.

At The Dermatology and Laser Group, we offer two of the most effective treatments for spider vein removal: laser therapy and sclerotherapy with hypertonic saline. Each method is highly effective, and in many cases, we combine both to achieve the best possible results.

Laser Spider Vein Removal

Laser treatment is a non-invasive option that uses targeted light energy to break down spider veins without the need for injections. The laser selectively heats and damages the blood vessels, causing them to collapse and gradually fade from view. This method is particularly effective for smaller spider veins. Since no needles are involved, laser therapy is an excellent choice for patients who prefer a non-injection approach.

Sclerotherapy with Hypertonic Saline

Sclerotherapy is a gold-standard treatment for spider veins on the legs. At our NYC office, we use hypertonic saline, a highly effective and well-tolerated solution, to safely eliminate unwanted veins. During the procedure, the solution is injected directly into the vein, irritating the vessel lining and causing it to collapse. Over time, the body naturally absorbs the treated vein, leaving behind clear, smooth skin.

A Customized Approach for Optimal Results

Every patient’s veins are unique, and the most effective treatment plan often involves a combination of laser therapy and sclerotherapy. At The Dermatology and Laser Group, we tailor each treatment session to the individual, selecting the best method for each vein to ensure optimal clearance with minimal discomfort and downtime.

Preparing for Your Treatment

One of the benefits of spider vein treatment is that there is minimal preparation required. However, to ensure the best experience and results, we ask that patients:

  • Avoid sunburn – Sun-exposed or burned skin can be more sensitive to laser treatment. If you plan to spend time outdoors before your appointment, wear sunscreen and protective clothing.
  • Shave the treatment area – For those treating leg veins, shaving beforehand helps optimize the procedure, whether receiving laser therapy or sclerotherapy injections.

The Spider Vein Treatment Procedure

  • Sclerotherapy – A fine needle is used to inject a small amount of hypertonic saline solution directly into the spider veins. This solution causes the vein to collapse, and over time, the body absorbs it naturally.
  • Laser Spider Vein Therapy – A specialized laser is applied to the skin’s surface, delivering precise energy that targets and breaks down the visible veins without affecting surrounding tissue.

What to Expect After Treatment

Spider vein removal is a simple, in-office procedure with no significant downtime. However, post-treatment care is essential for optimal healing and results.

  • Stay active – We recommend at least 30 minutes of walking or leg-focused exercise every day for three weeks after treatment. This helps maintain healthy circulation and prevents blood from pooling in the treated veins.
  • Wear compression garments – Mild compression stockings or exercise tights should be worn as much as possible for three weeks following treatment. This gentle pressure supports proper blood flow and enhances the body’s ability to clear away the treated veins.

Who Is A Candidate for Leg Spider Vein Treatment?

Spider vein treatment is a great option for anyone looking to improve the appearance of visible veins on their legs, but the best candidates meet certain criteria.

Most patients are eligible for treatment if they:

  • Have small, visible spider veins on the legs that they wish to remove.
  • Are in good overall health with no active skin infections or uncontrolled medical conditions.
  • Are not pregnant or breastfeeding, as hormonal changes can affect vein formation.
  • Do not have a history of blood clotting disorders or severe vascular disease.

Frequently Asked Questions

Potenza RF Microneedling

How many treatments are needed to remove spider veins?

The number of treatments varies depending on the size and number of spider veins. Many patients see significant improvement after one to three sessions, but additional treatments may be necessary for optimal clearance.

Does spider vein treatment hurt?

Both laser therapy and sclerotherapy are well-tolerated, with most patients experiencing only mild discomfort. Sclerotherapy involves a slight stinging sensation during the injection, while laser treatment may feel like a series of quick snaps against the skin. Any discomfort is temporary and resolves quickly.

How long does it take to see results?

Results are not immediate, as the body takes time to absorb the treated veins. Most patients notice improvement within three to six weeks, with continued fading over several months. Larger veins may take longer to disappear completely.

Will the treated spider veins come back?

Treated veins do not return, but new spider veins can develop over time due to genetics, lifestyle, or hormonal changes. Maintaining healthy circulation, wearing compression stockings when necessary, and following preventive care can help minimize future vein formation.
