The Difference Between "Getting Botox" and Medical Artistry
In New York City, you have endless options for injectables. But there is a profound difference between a high-volume medical spa and a specialized dermatology practice.
Dr. Arash Akhavan is not just a provider. As a long-standing national expert, he trains other physicians in the art of safe, natural Botox injection techniques. He has served as an academic faculty member at The Mount Sinai School of Medicine, an Allergan Faculty Member, and a Revance "Guru" Trainer.
Many clinics focus on "units" and volume. We focus on your anatomy and physiology. We believe the best Botox is the kind no one knows you had—leaving you looking rested, refreshed, and completely natural.

The Science of Natural Looking Results
Botox® Cosmetic is a tool; the result depends entirely on the hand holding it.
Why Standard Injections Fail: Most franchise clinics and med spas use a 'cookie-cutter' face template. This often leads to the dreaded 'frozen' forehead or heavy brows because every face is treated the exact same way.
The Dermatology & Laser Group Difference: Dr. Akhavan uses a Micro-Droplet Technique. Instead of blasting the muscle, he places precise, smaller doses at specific depths of your unique facial anatomy. This preserves your ability to express emotion while eliminating the lines that make you look tired. You won't look 'done'—you will just look like you slept 10 hours.
Beyond the Basics: Targeted Solutions
-
Look Rested: Smooth forehead lines and crow's feet without freezing your smile.
-
Slim the Face: Reduce the Masseter muscles to slim a square jawline.
-
Lift the Neck: Tighten the jawline and reduce Platysma bands (Nefertiti Lift).
-
Stop Sweating: Clinical-grade relief for Hyperhidrosis (Excessive Sweating) of the underarms or palms.
-
Relieve Tension: Medical treatment for TMJ and Teeth Grinding.
-
Prevent Aging: "Prejuvenation" micro-dosing to stop lines before they etch in, i.e., Preventative Botox.
What To Expect During Your Visit
Your appointment at The Dermatology and Laser Group is designed to be efficient, comfortable, and clinically precise. While Dr. Akhavan offers a deep dive in the podcast episode adjacent, here is the quick breakdown of your visit:
-
Step 1: The Analysis. Dr. Akhavan performs a facial anatomy exam to map your unique muscle movement. We never inject without analyzing your expressions first.
-
Step 2: The Comfort. We use prescription-grade numbing cream (optional) and the Japanese TSK 'Invisible Needle'—the thinnest needle available—for a near-painless experience.
-
Step 3: The Treatment. The actual injection process takes just 10–15 minutes. Dr. Akhavan uses his micro-droplet technique to ensure precise placement.
-
Step 4: Immediate Return. There is zero downtime. You can return to work or dinner plans immediately, with only minor restrictions (no gym until next day and no pressure on the areas for 4 hours).

Aftercare: How to Maximize Your Results
Following these aftercare instructions helps ensure you achieve the best possible results from your Botox treatment and reduces the risk of unwanted side effects. Proper care supports a smooth recovery and maximizes the longevity and natural appearance of your results.
To ensure optimal results and minimize the risk of side effects, it’s important to follow these aftercare instructions after your Botox treatment:
- Avoid touching, rubbing, or massaging the treated areas for at least 24 hours. This helps prevent the Botox from spreading to unintended muscles.
- Do not lie down for at least 4 hours after your injections.
- Hold off on exercise or strenuous activity until the next day. Elevated blood flow can potentially affect how the product settles.
- Skip facials, chemical peels, or other cosmetic treatments on the treated areas for at least 24 hours.
- Wait before applying makeup to the treated areas, ideally for a few hours, to reduce the risk of irritation.
Most patients experience little to no downtime after Botox injections and can return to normal activities immediately. However, some mild and temporary effects are common:
- Redness, swelling, or slight bruising at the injection sites, which typically resolve within a few hours to a couple of days.
- Mild tenderness or a pinprick sensation in the treated areas.
- Rarely, a mild headache may occur after treatment.
These effects are generally short-lived and should not interfere with your daily routine.
- Exercise: Wait at least 24 hours after botox before engaging in vigorous physical activity or workouts.
- Facials and Skin Treatments: Postpone facials, massages, or other skin treatments in the treated area for at least 24 hours.
- Makeup: You may gently apply makeup after a few hours, but avoid excessive pressure.
As with all of our cosmetic treatments, we stress patient safety above all other factors with our Botox treatments. The combination of Dr. Arash Akhavan's excellent knowledge of anatomy, precise injections, and less-is-more philosophy allow us to provide the safest Botox treatments. One of the side effects patients fear most with Botox injections is drooping eyelids (ptosis). In over 17 years of practice and over 15,000 Botox treatments, Dr. Akhavan has not had even one single episode of that feared side effect.
Occasional minor bruising is typical with any injectable procedure. For more information on Botox Manufacturer Safety Information visit their website.
While serious side effects are rare, contact your provider immediately if you experience:
- Difficulty breathing, swallowing, or speaking
- Severe or persistent pain or swelling
- Unusual muscle weakness or drooping in untreated areas
- Signs of an allergic reaction, such as rash, itching, or difficulty breathing
Mild bruising, redness, or discomfort is normal and should resolve quickly. If you have concerns about your recovery, don’t hesitate to reach out to our office for guidance.

Botox FAQ's
We believe in complete transparency. Unlike many NYC med spas that charge by the "unit" (which often leads to surprise bills and "upsell anxiety"), we charge a flat fee of $750 for the first area and only an additional $200 for extra areas. This fee covers the full dosage required for your specific muscle strength and anatomy to achieve a perfect, natural result. As an added bonus- areas requiring small amounts of Botox, such as for lip flip, for gummy smile, or in the chin area, are included free of charge!

Botox is FDA-approved for adults 18 and older who wish to soften or prevent dynamic wrinkles. However, treatment is not recommended if you are currently pregnant or breastfeeding, or if you have a history of neuromuscular disorders. During your consultation, Dr. Akhavan will review your full medical history to ensure safety before proceeding.
No. While the name sounds intimidating, Botox Cosmetic® is a highly purified protein that has been used safely in medicine for over 20 years. The amount used for cosmetic purposes is microscopic—far below the levels that would cause illness. When administered by a board-certified expert like Dr. Akhavan, it is one of the safest aesthetic procedures in the world.
You will begin to see results within 3–7 days, with the full effect visible at 14 days. With the old Botox Cosmetic brand, results typically last 3 to 4 months as your body naturally metabolizes the product. For most of our patients we now do Botox treatments with Daxxify, the newest peptide-powered alternative that can last up to 6 months.
Absolutely not. The "frozen" look is caused by over-dosing and poor placement. Dr. Akhavan’s signature Micro-Droplet Technique combined with his expertise in tailoring results to each patients unique anatomy combine to soften lines while preserving your natural facial animation. Our goal is for friends and colleagues to tell you that you look "rested," not that you "had work done."
