Is Tattoo Removal Painful?
Medically Reviewed by Arash Akhavan, MD, FAAD
Many people who are considering laser tattoo removal hesitate because of one major concern: pain. Tattoo removal has long been associated with intense discomfort, often described as worse than getting the tattoo itself. Stories of excruciating sessions, burning sensations, and unbearable stinging have led many to delay or avoid removing unwanted tattoos altogether.
So, is tattoo removal painful? Thanks to modern advancements in laser technology and specialized pain management techniques, the experience of tattoo removal has dramatically improved. At The Dermatology and Laser Group, we have perfected a painless tattoo removal approach, ensuring that patients remain as comfortable as possible throughout the process.
Painless Tattoo Removal
At The Dermatology and Laser Group, we have perfected the process of painless tattoo removal, ensuring that our patients can undergo laser tattoo removal without the intense discomfort that has traditionally been associated with the procedure. While many places offer little to no pain management, we take extra steps to make sure our patients feel nothing at all during treatment.
Before we even begin using the laser, we fully numb the treatment area using a combination of prescription-strength numbing cream, local anesthesia (lidocaine injections), and continuous cooling with a Zimmer Cooler.
-
Prescription-Strength Numbing Cream
The first step in our pain-free approach is the application of a highly effective topical anesthetic. This prescription-strength numbing cream is applied to the tattooed area before treatment, dulling any initial sensations before deeper anesthesia is used. -
Lidocaine Injections for Complete Numbness
After the numbing cream has taken effect, we take pain relief a step further by injecting lidocaine directly into the treatment area. Lidocaine is a medical-grade local anesthetic that completely blocks nerve signals, fully numbing the skin and underlying tissue. This ensures that patients feel no pain at all during the procedure. -
Zimmer Cooler for Added Comfort
Throughout the procedure, we also use a Zimmer Cooler, a high-powered cooling device that blows cold air onto the skin. This further reduces discomfort and inflammation, making the process even more comfortable and relaxing for our patients.
By taking this multi-step approach, we provide truly painless tattoo removal, allowing patients to erase unwanted tattoos without worrying about pain. Thanks to our advanced numbing techniques, most patients are surprised to feel absolutely nothing during treatment, making tattoo removal at The Dermatology and Laser Group a stress-free, pain-free experience.
Minimizing Discomfort During Tattoo Removal Healing
While our painless tattoo removal techniques ensure that patients feel no discomfort during the procedure, proper aftercare is essential for minimizing any discomfort during the healing process. Laser tattoo removal creates a controlled response in the skin as the body works to flush out ink particles, and following the right post-treatment care can help reduce inflammation, irritation, and sensitivity after the session.
To keep discomfort to a minimum, we recommend the following aftercare steps:
-
Keep the Treated Area Clean
Gently wash the area twice daily with mild soap and water to prevent infection and irritation. Avoid scrubbing or rubbing the area, as this can cause unnecessary discomfort and slow the healing process. -
Apply Antibiotic Ointments
To promote fast healing and reduce inflammation, apply a thin layer of bacitracin or mupirocin to the treated area. These topical antibiotics help prevent infection and keep the skin moisturized, reducing the risk of excessive dryness or irritation. -
Use Non-Adherent Bandages
Covering the treated area with a non-adherent bandage (such as Telfa) helps protect the skin from friction and external irritants. This is particularly important for tattoos in areas prone to rubbing against clothing, such as the arms, legs, or torso. Keeping the area covered also reduces inflammation faster, further minimizing any post-treatment discomfort.
By following these simple aftercare steps, patients can expect a smooth and comfortable healing process with minimal irritation. At The Dermatology and Laser Group, we provide our patients with detailed post-care instructions to ensure that the tattoo removal process is as comfortable as possible from start to finish. With the right care, discomfort is kept to an absolute minimum, allowing for a quick and easy recovery.
